Voice disorders are a range of conditions that affect the larynx (voice box). They can cause changes to the voice, called dysphonia, or cause a complete loss of voice, called aphonia. Voice disorders can be structural (organic changes resulting from physical changes to the vocal structures), neurogenic (organic changes resulting from the central or peripheral nervous system e.g. tremors, vocal fold paralysis after a stroke), or functional (behavioural changes resulting from inefficient use of the vocal structures)
Assessment will include a thorough discussion regarding the patient's medical history, throat health and the impact of their voice symptoms on day-to-day life. A laryngoscopy might be recommended if one hasn’t recently been completed. Treatment of voice disorders can be very successful with a targeted treatment approach.
